Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of a magnetized fuel on the performance of the fuel combustion in the boiler. The performance was observed by examining fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. In this experimental work a diesel fuel was subjected to a magnetic field placed on the fuel supply line to magnetize the fuel before it was admitted to the burner of the boiler. The magnetic field used in this study came from two permanent magnets, each with 2000 Gauss.

The experimental results showed an improvement in boiler performance after the fuel was subjected to a magnetic field. Fuel consumption decreased by 3.675%. Exhaust gas emissions showed a reduction of nearly 38.04% in CO and 21.89% in HC. An increase of 3.432% in CO2 and 4.34% in exhaust temperature were also observed.

Keywords: external combustion engine, effect of magnetic field on fuel consumption and exhaust emission and exhaust gas temperature.

Introduction

The conventional boiler which runs on the combustion of diesel fuel has been around for two centuries. The external combustion engine has a huge role in generating steam in a power plant for its speed, high efficiency and low cost to run. Diesel combustion fuel is the industry's leading prime mover and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future, making it imperative to improve fuel consumption and emission characteristics.

Many experimental studies have presented evidence of the benefits of magnetic treatment, which enhances fuel economy and reduces exhaust emissions. Prior research found reductions in fuel consumption of up to 15%, CO concentration reductions of up to 7%, NO reductions of up to 30%, and CH4 reductions of up to 40% when using permanent magnets of varying intensities (2000–8000 Gauss) on the fuel line. Other studies found reductions in fuel consumption ranging between 9–14%, with the maximum reduction obtained using field intensity of 6000 Gauss.

The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of the magnetic field on Iraqi diesel fueling a boiler's burner and its impact on fuel consumption as well as exhaust gas emissions.
